Why is Bled Popular
Bled is that picturesque town with a sparkling lake and a small island with a church perched right in the middle. This lovely location is one of the top features that serve as a symbol of the unique character of Bled.
Bled is surrounded by mountains and hills including the Julian Alps on the South and West and the Austrian-Slovenian Karawanks mountain range to the north. This is what makes Bled a small but exciting fun ski destination during the winter months.
However, Lake Bled is no doubt the most popular attraction in the area. The lake boasts of a mixed origin, most likely tectonic and glacier, with a tiny island in the centre where you will find the simple but striking Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria.
The current structure of the church dates back to the 17th century. Before this, however, there used to be a Gothic-style church and other religious temples before that, which included a temple for Ziva, the Slavic goddess.
To get to the church, first, you need to cross the lake before climbing up the 99 steps that will take you to the exhausting but beautiful entrance. A unique feature worth mentioning is the separate bell tower that stands at 54 meters and clearly stands out from the rest of the verdant island.
What to Do in Bled
Searching for a Bled property is a decision you won’t regret because of the many things and attractions that Bled has to offer. But one of the experiences you shouldn’t miss is taking a stroll by the lake. Go for a walk or even jump into the water when you feel like going for a swim.
You can also go to the next viewpoint, particularly on the southwestern part of the lake that is closer to Pilgrimage Church Island just around Café Belvedere and Vila Bled.
The surrounding hills and mountains are also a perfect spot for a Bled property that offers amazing views. There are several popular hilltops that you can try exploring, including Mala Osojnica, Valika Osognica, and Ojstrica.
However, if you simply wish to try one, Ojstrica has spectacular views of both Lake Bled and the Pilgrimage Church Island. It only got an elevation gain of 100 meters, and it will take you a mere 20 to 25 minutes to hike up to the top from Velika Zaka.
Getting on a stand-up paddle or a boat will also let you reach the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria. Once you get inside the church, you will find the wishing bell in front of the altar that you should ring three times before making one wish. Go to the top of the bell tower to see the lake from a whole new perspective.
With the stunning natural beauty of the area, you won’t be hard-pressed to find the right Bled property for you in no time!
